Sonoma County offers a spectacular backdrop for all sorts of events, but with that spectacular backdrop comes challenging communications. Sonoma County Radio Amateurs has a long history of providing radio support for many public events, but especially those events going through the remote parts of Sonoma County where cellular coverage is marginal at best. SCRA goes the extra mile, working with event promoters to provide safe and seamless radio coverage.
All public service events are open to any amateur radio operator (ham). We especially encourage new and inexperienced ham operators to participate. If you are new to the hobby, sign up as a Shadow and learn how to operate in remote areas with experienced hams, and get to know Sonoma County like you never have before. It’s a blast! Plus, SCRA has put together four portable radio kits to loan to new operators and hams who are not equipped for portable operations, so they can have the opportunity to work public service events.
Most of the bike events have automobile and moto SAG (Support And Gear vehicle) positions available for radio operators. Note that SCRA does not manage SAG drivers for any event (we only support the radio communication part). That is the responsibility of the event’s organizers – if you wish to SAG you should also volunteer at the organizer’s volunteer web page and let them know you are an amateur radio operator.
We invite all members to sign up for the below events…especially new members! We have plenty of experienced mentors to guide you. If you are not a club member, email the Comm Boss to sign up. The event Comm Boss reserves the right to adjust your signup based on his/her knowledge of the event.
