IRONMAN Full Triathlon

May 12, 2018

About this Race

The new IRONMAN Santa Rosa offers athletes the same high-quality event they’ve come to know and love in the heart of Sonoma County, with winding roads dotted with vineyards and world-class accommodation. For past race results from IRONMAN Vineman, please visit the event page.

Staged in beautiful Sonoma County and traversing through quaint communities like Geyersville and Healdsburg, IRONMAN Santa Rosa draws not only triathletes, but their wine and food loving family and support crews back every year. The event is a ticket into the heart of the world-famous wine regions of the Napa and Sonoma valleys, and once you’re there, you won’t want to leave. There are B&Bs and boutique hotel options to suit every budget, as well as thousands of wineries, craft breweries, and farm-to-table restaurants for pre-race fueling and post-race celebrations. The race also offers a springboard for vacation itineraries including the San Francisco Bay Area, Santa Cruz mountains, and coastal redwood forests.

The split transition race begins at Lake Sonoma, nestled in the beautiful mountains of Northern California. The 2.4-mile swim is a single loop taking place in calm, clean Lake Sonoma. Athletes will transition to their bikes, setting out on the 112-mile course featuring gentle rollers as they ride through famous wine country and quaint towns. The City of Santa Rosa hosts transition two where athletes will begin a tree-lined, two-loop marathon along the Santa Rosa Creek trail. The finish line will take place at the new Courthouse Square park ideally located in downtown in Santa Rosa where great food and wine can be enjoyed by all spectators.  …more

Turlock Amateur Radio Club Auction @ Crossroads Church
Oct 14 @ 8:00 AM

General Auction Information/Guidelines

Since 1990 the Turlock Amateur Radio Club (TARC) has conducted auctions of ham equipment as a community service to the widows and beneficiaries of “silent keys.”

The auctions benefit the ham community by providing opportunities not otherwise available:

  • New hams get an opportunity to purchase equipment at prices that are a fraction of the cost of new equipment at the retail store. A great way to get into a new hobby.
  • Experienced hams get an opportunity to purchase classic equipment items and accessories for equipment lines that are no longer currently at available at retail stores.
  • All hams get an opportunity to purchase supplies and small parts and build up their own stocks of bits and pieces to repair old equipment or build new homebrew goodies (doo-hickeys or what-cha-ma-callits!).

The Club receives a “contribution” to its’ coffers which is used to:

  • Pay the direct costs of the Auction such as hall rentals, advertising, cleaning fees.
  • Maintain the repeater systems situated on mountaintops, six San Joaquin Valley cities and two National Parks. These repeaters are a valuable link in the nation’s emergency communications system.

Auctioneer:
Grady Williams, (K6IXA, 209-358-1166). Grady has been the driving force and auctioneer since the club created the concept.

JOTA – Jamboree On The Air @ Graton Fire Protection District Firehouse
Oct 21 @ 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Cancelled – local JOTA activities with the Boy Scouts have been cancelled this year due to recent fires.

The Jamboree-on-the-Air, or JOTA, is an annual Scouting event that uses amateur radio to link Scouts around the world, around the nation, and in your own community. Held on the third full weekend of October each year, this worldwide jamboree requires no travel, other than to a nearby radio amateur’s ham shack.

This year the event will be held at the Graton Fire Protection District Firehouse, 3750 Gravenstein Hwy N., Sebastopol, CA 95472.

All inquires should be directed to Dave Kraybill.

Mendocino Rally @ South Cow Mountain OHV Park
Oct 28 @ 7:30 AM – 6:15 PM

The Mendocino Rally will be back for 2017. The Mendo Rally Group is putting on a smaller event making it a low-key, one-day event. The rally has been moved out of the heat of summer, and will be on Saturday, October 28, 2017.

This year the event will be held entirely in South Cow Mountain OHV Park near Ukiah. In addition to the normal rally cars, the rally will be hosting a group of Side-by-Side UTV’s racer’s. Don’t know what that is. Please go to http://mendocinorally.com/.

The Mendocino Rally is not a SCRA event. The rally does however need ham radio volunteers in order for it to take place. The rally organizers are seeking to have about 15 ham radio operators help make this event a success. If you have volunteered in the past, great. I hope you do so again this year.

To volunteer please go to the volunteer page at the Mendo Rally web site, http://mendocinorally.com/. You can also contact Jim Draeger, KI6REK at jimdraeger5@gmail.com for more information.  Thanks, hope I see you at the rally.

Technician License Class – November Introductory @ Graton Fire Protection District Firehouse
Nov 17 @ 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Welcome to the exciting world of Ham Radio!

Technician License Class

Our next Technician License class will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017 and Suncay, November 19, 2017.   The Saturday class will begin at 8:00AM and continue until 6PM.  The Sunday class will begin at 8:00AM and end at 3:00PM when the Technician License Examination will be conducted by our team of SCRA Volunteer Examiners.  We will have frequent, short breaks during the class, and 45 minutes for a lunch break each day.  There will be an introductory class meeting on Friday, November 17th, from 6:00PM to 9:00PM to cover some of the class material in greater depth; and, we will also conduct a practice examination to provide you with useful feedback before the formal class.  Location for the class will be the training room at the Graton Fire Protection District Firehouse at 3750 Gravenstein Highway (State Route 116) North of Sebastopol, CA.

Our weekend Technician License classes have been very successful.   Since 2007 when SCRA started its weekend Technician license classes, over 250 people have obtained their amateur radio license.  In our July 2017 class, all nine students passed the exam on their first attempt.

Take our class if you are interested in obtaining your Technician Class ham radio license and obtaining valuable information relating to assembly and proper and safe operation of your amateur radio station.  Unlike cell phones, and family radio service (FRS) walkie-talkies, the amateur radio service is available only to qualified applicants, so you need to prepare ahead of the examination.  Our class will give you the background to understand and enjoy amateur radio!

The Technician License test covers basic rules, operating practices and radio theory and must be passed in order to qualify for, and obtain, your ham radio license.  You should expect to be successful with this entry level test, providing you prepare for your license in the weeks before the class. The study material is not hard, but needs to be covered before you join our class and take the test.

There is no charge for our class.  The Volunteer Examiner testing fee is $15.00.  Check our VE Exam schedule under the Events tab for times and places for license examinations throughout the year.

If you would like to be in our class, please contact me directly via email.  We have study materials available now, and we strongly recommend you  get started with your pre-class preparation as soon as you can!  There is no charge for the class itself, but it requires prestudy of the Gordon West Technician Class study materials.  Cost for the study materials, including the Gordon West 244 page Technician Class study manual, is $20.00, and you can arrange for pickup from me.  Or, you can order the book directly from the publisher:  www.w5yi.org.   We will be using Gordo’s proven study guide and method in this class.  Virtually every one of our students passed the Technician License exam on their first attempt.  Our method works!

If you would like to register for our November class, please contact me, so that I can add your name to the list before the class fills up.  We can handle a maximum of 16 students.

GENERAL CLASS or EXTRA CLASS license upgrade?  Contact me and we’ll advise you concerning self-study assistance  if that would be helpful. Mentors for SCRA members desiring to upgrade are always available to help.

We at SCRA look forward to hearing from you.
